Cochlear Global Headquarters
Cochlear
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Aligning research and technology synergies to create a collaborative environment and facilitate continued advancements in hearing solutions.
Cochlear required a new global headquarters to house 1,100 staff and their main manufacturing and research facilities.
Delivering solutions for unique requirements
There was a unique requirement to ‘tune’ the building to accommodate the microscopic vibration tolerances needed to produce the bionic ear implants.
Drawing on a unique analytic ability, Calibre Built Environment predicted the vibrations of the floor structures down to a person’s footsteps, which allowed our design team to adjust the building to meet Cochlear’s requirements. This included thickening specific post tensioned slabs and adding vibration control features.

4.5 star NABERS rating
The six-storey structure has two interconnected buildings, which features large span post-tensioned floor slabs for vibration control, an anechoic chamber and clinical grade ‘clean’ rooms.
The building achieved a 4 Star Green Star rating and a 4.5 Star National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) which is as a testament to its environmental commitments.
The design was completed in partnership with architects Toland Williams.
