Stuart Landsborough’s Puzzling World is a unique, one-in-a-world attraction specialising in puzzling eccentricity. For 40 years it has amazed visitors and is one of the most photographed attractions in New Zealand.

From living walls, wave ceilings, stone carpet and hanging waterfalls visitors engage with stunning creations from some of New Zealand’s finest artists. The client wanted to expand the attraction, creating a new illusion room and commissioning new sculptures.

Strong collaboration with the architect, main contractor and sub-contractors was essential to the delivery of this project. The architect had a very clear vision, requiring innovative engineering solutions, which were to be executed within a tight deadline.

Featuring over 20 large sculptures, artworks and displays, the Puzzling World building itself offers illusionary aspects within its design. Consequently, the architect intended the main roof structure to look as if it is floating, with glazing to the end walls and along one side of the building.

To achieve this, our structural team designed external columns that penetrate through the roof, allowing light to pass through the void around the columns and creating the illusion of floating.
