Cochlear Global Headquarters

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Cochlear required a new global headquarters to house 1,100 staff, as well as their main manufacturing and research facilities. There was a unique requirement to ‘tune’ the building to accommodate the microscopic vibration tolerances needed to produce the bionic ear implants.

Drawing on a unique analytic ability, Calibre predicted the vibrations of the floor structures down to a person’s footsteps, which allowed our design team to adjust the building to meet Cochlear’s requirements. This included thickening specific post tensioned slabs and adding vibration control features.

The six-storey structure has two interconnected buildings, which feature large span post-tensioned floor slabs for vibration control, an anechoic chamber and clinical grade ‘clean’ rooms.

The design was completed in partnership with architects Toland Williams.
