Calibre to support Argyle Diamond Mine closure

Calibre to support Argyle Diamond Mine closure

Calibre has been awarded a key role for the delivery of the closure of Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine. The mine, located in the Kimberly region of Western Australia, is one of the world’s largest producers of diamonds, the largest supplier of natural coloured diamonds, and will continue to mine through to the end of 2020.

Argyle is a technologically sophisticated underground mine and was the first block cave mine within Western Australia, with innovative productivity and efficiency techniques. As the mine prepares for closure, we are committed with Rio Tinto to ensure operations continue at the high standard and the closure works protect the Argyle legacy.

The Calibre team was part of the initial Argyle Diamond Mine Closure feasibility study, which was successfully delivered by an integrated Rio/Calibre team. Calibre’s Mike Buchan, Operations Manager and Matt Howard, Integrated Team Leader, led the works to provide input and delivery of the revegetation strategies, successful administration of work packages, optimisation of project reporting and a cost-saving forecast against the pre-feasibility study.

This newly awarded support work will continue our engagement with Rio Tinto on the Argyle closure project. The team will work across multiple parts of the scope ensuring our previous project knowledge is incorporated at each milestone of the closure. It is integral for a successful closure, that the decommissioning works and land rehabilitation are performed in consultation with Traditional Owners, councils and local communities, ensuring Argyle leaves a positive lasting benefit.

Adrian Chapman, Manager Mining and Minerals WA, said Calibre is proud to be supporting such an iconic mine closure. “As one of the first large mine closures within Western Australia for Rio Tinto, we understand that this will set the standard for major mine closures in the future. Respectfully rehabilitating former mine sites like Argyle is something which Calibre is proud to be associated with” said Mr Chapman.
