T155 Expansion Project - Rail

Fortescue Metals Group

Pilbara Region, Western Australia, Australia

Fortescue Metals Group (Fortescue) was expanding its operations in the Pilbara through the development of new mines within the Solomon Hub. The expansion involved construction of a new rail spur to the Solomon Mine and upgrading the existing rail mainline from Port Hedland to Christmas Creek.

Calibre was engaged to design and project manage the mainline upgrade and Solomon Spur.

Mainline Upgrade

The mainline upgrade included expanding Fortescue’s railway capacity from Port Hedland to Christmas Creek by duplicating approximately 152km of the existing railway. The workshop facilities, access and service roads and supporting rail infrastructures were also upgraded.

Solomon Spur

The Solomon Spur involved a new railway system of approximately 142km, from Chainage 175 of the existing mainline to the Solomon Mine. This included the infrastructure associated with the rail and mine site, such as airstrip, operations and construction accommodation, plant, roads, power, water, fuel, utilities and stockyards for the export of iron ore.

The project was completed on time and within budget, with an exemplary safety record.
