Sikorsky MHSCo Facility
Sikorsky Aircraft Australia
Yerriyong, New South Wales, Australia
With the arrival of the Royal Australian Navy’s new Sikorsky MH-60 Romeo aircraft, Sikorsky Aircraft Australia engaged Calibre to provide design services for a new state-of-the-art aviation facility, including an 8,000m2 hangar complex, 3000m2 logistics warehouse and associated pavements.
Our team worked closely with stakeholders to meet the requirements of both Sikorsky and Defence. Key achievements include a 4,000m2 column free hangar space with a 62m clear span, promoting versatility and functionality of the floor area, and one of the largest panel lift doors in the southern hemisphere at 7.5m high and 29m wide. The hangar complex also houses two-storey annexes at each end of the building containing offices, workshops and equipment storage.
The structure of the complex comprises a heavy load hangar floor with a steelwork frame that featured 90m x 60m clear span and an underslung travelling crane in the roof. The civil services involved earthworks, storm water drainage, external pavements and retaining walls.
Located in the commercial precinct adjacent to HMAS Albatross, the facility will provide essential logistics and maintenance support for 24 Romeo helicopters for the next 30 years, as well as house 120 personnel.
