Seafarers Pedestrian Bridge

Calibre worked closely with the design and construct contractor to deliver the design and documentation for this bridge, which crosses the Yarra River at the western edge of the central business district, connecting the Melbourne Convention Centre with the Docklands precinct.
With a main span of 75m, almost the full width of the river, the bridge uses elliptical arches of structural steel and tie rods to support the deck, closely following the design concept by architects Grimshaw Partners.
Our team undertook three-dimensional Strand7 computer modeling under various configurations of live load to investigate possible dynamic excitation. As a result, two mass dampers were installed at mid-span and can be adjusted to eliminate possible excitation.
Throughout the project, construction risk was mitigated by minimising labour intensive construction above the river.
