Technical Paper: Rio Tinto Cape Lambert Trip Service Facility Project

Rio Tinto Iron Ore engaged Calibre’s Projects division in a vital component of the Rail Capacity Enhancement Project; the creation of a Trip Service Facility (TSF) located at Cape Lambert in Western Australia. The team successfully delivered the complex engineering and design behind the TSF, which enabled expansion to 360 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) transported by train from port to mine.

The TSF at Cape Lambert is integral to supporting the growth of Rio Tinto’s production capacity to 360 Mtpa. To reach the planned 360 Mtpa output, the number of locomotive consists through the yard has doubled. In real terms, this equates to an additional 12 consists through the Cape Lambert yard every 24 hours and includes an additional 36 mainline locomotives and yard support locomotives which also require refuelling.
